“So… what’s the occasion?”
I get asked this constantly. By curious friends of clients, by women sliding into my DMs, by the woman at the bank when I tell her what I do.
And honestly? I get it.
We’ve been taught that doing something this bold, this indulgent, this centered on ourselves has to be earned somehow. That it needs a permission slip. A wedding. An anniversary. A birthday with a dramatic number attached to it. A partner to hand the album to, so it’s easier to explain at brunch.
Babe, let me be the first to tell you: the occasion is that you’re alive and you want to.
That’s it. That’s the only requirement.
You don’t need to justify wanting to feel beautiful. You don’t need to defend wanting to be seen. You don’t need to make your joy more palatable by wrapping it up as a gift for somebody else.
But I know it helps to have a little more runway than that. Sometimes we need examples. Sometimes we need to hear that other women went first.
So here’s one of them:

Read that first part again, because it’s the whole thing: she wasn’t even selling to me. I’m not here to talk you into anything, babe. I’m here for whenever you decide.
So let’s talk about the reasons women walk through my studio doors every single week; some you’d expect, and some you maybe haven’t heard said out loud yet.
The Ones You’d Expect
The bride-to-be. Yes, bridal boudoir is beautiful. Yes, the groom’s reaction to that album is usually priceless. And yes, it makes an incredible wedding gift. But can I tell you a little secret? My brides almost always tell me afterward that the photos ended up being for them. The album was the excuse; the experience was the point. In the middle of all the planning, all the pressure, all the being-everything-for-everyone, they got to come in, be pampered, and feel like themselves again… or meet a version of themselves they hadn’t fully seen yet.

The milestone birthday. Thirty. Forty. Fifty. Sixty-five, and yes, I’ve photographed her, and she was magnificent. There is something about a birthday with a zero in it that makes women stop negotiating with themselves. Maybe it’s the clarity. Maybe it’s the tiny rebellion of saying, “Actually, I’m going to do the thing.” Whatever it is, I love it. If a number on the calendar is what finally gets you in front of my camera, babe, I will take it.
The anniversary. Whether it’s a gift for a partner or a quiet celebration of a relationship that has survived some things, anniversary sessions carry a tenderness I really love. There’s a softness to them, but also a confidence. A kind of look how far I’ve come energy.
And a little nudge for my recent brides: the traditional first-anniversary gift is paper. Paper, babe. As in photographs. As in an album. I did not make the rules; I just happen to be very well positioned to help you follow them.
The summer reset. A summer session has its own kind of magic. Maybe it’s the lightness of the season, the extra skin, the tan lines, the energy of wanting to feel good in your body now instead of waiting on some future version of yourself. Summer has a way of reminding women they’re allowed to take up space. That’s a pretty perfect reason to book.
The Ones Nobody Talks About
The divorce. Some of the most powerful sessions I have ever photographed happened within a year of a divorce being finalized. There’s a very specific kind of electricity in a woman who is reintroducing herself to herself. A woman remembering that she belongs to her. If that’s you, I want you to know these sessions are not sad. They’re not awkward. They’re not about proving anything to anyone. They’re some of the most joyful, freeing days in my studio, full stop.
The body that did something hard. The body that carried a baby. The body that finished treatment. The body that got strong again after an injury, a diagnosis, a surgery, or a long season of pure survival mode. We spend so much time criticizing our bodies for how they look and so little time honoring what they’ve done. A session flips that math. It lets you pause, look at yourself with some softness, and say, “Oh. Look at her. She made it.”

The new chapter. The big move. The new business. The promotion. The degree. The kids leaving for college. The moment you look around and realize life doesn’t look the same anymore… and neither do you. Those in-between seasons matter. The becoming matters. Any moment where you realize you’re stepping into someone new is worth documenting, because you will never be this exact version of yourself again.
The quiet comeback. No headline. No big announcement. No confetti cannon. Just a woman who spent a couple of years underwater; grief, burnout, caretaking, depression, heartbreak, life… and is finally starting to feel like herself again. If this is you, you do not have to explain a thing to me. Truly. I’ve held space for this more times than I can count, and it is an honor every single time. Sometimes healing doesn’t look loud. Sometimes it looks like booking the session anyway.
The confidence you want back. Not because it disappeared forever, but because it got buried. Under work. Under motherhood. Under stress. Under illness. Under all the million little ways women are taught to put themselves last. So many clients come in saying some version of “I just want to feel like me again.” Babe, that is a valid reason. More than valid, actually. It’s a beautiful one.
And Then There’s My Favorite Reason
Ready for this one?

“I just wanted to.”
Hands down, the women who book with no big occasion at all are the ones most stunned by their own galleries. Because they walked in expecting a photoshoot and walked out with something closer to proof.
Proof that they never needed the milestone.
Never needed the partner.
Never needed the permission slip.
Proof that “because I felt like it” is a complete sentence.
“Okay, But Does My Reason Count?”
Let me guess… you read that whole list, found yourself somewhere in it, and immediately started arguing with yourself. Well, mine isn’t as big as a divorce. Mine isn’t a milestone birthday. Mine is kind of silly.
Yes. It counts.
Here’s what every reason on that list actually has in common: they’re all just doorways back to yourself. Some women come in celebrating. Some come in rebuilding. Some come in nervous and talking a mile a minute. Some come in after years of putting everyone else first. Some just woke up one day and thought, why not now?
If it matters to you, it counts. If it would feel healing, freeing, exciting, affirming, or even a little bit thrilling, it counts.
You do not need a reason that would impress anyone else. Wanting to see yourself clearly, even once, is reason enough.
Whatever Your Reason, Here’s What I Promise
You will not be compared to anyone.
You will not be posed like a stranger.
You will not be expected to know what to do with your hands, your face, your body, or your nerves.
You’ll be coached through every single frame. We’ll hype you up, fix the tiny details, keep it moving, and laugh more than you expect to. You’ll see your images the same day, and you choose every single one that makes it into your gallery; nothing goes out into the world without you saying yes to it first.
And I know that last part sounds like a lot of pressure. It isn’t. Here’s what one of my clients said about that exact moment:
“Julia made me feel comfortable and very sexy during the shoot. It was extremely difficult to decide which pictures I liked best! I wanted them ALL!“
— a recent five-star Google review
That’s the plot twist nobody sees coming. You walk in braced to hate every photo of yourself, and you walk out unable to narrow it down.
And you’ll leave with photos of a woman you maybe haven’t looked directly at in years. Not because she wasn’t there, but because life got loud.
That’s the part I love most about this work. It gives women a chance to pause long enough to actually see themselves again.
The occasion? You’re here. That’s plenty.
Come Tell Me Your Reason
